In-Depth Comparison: 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon vs 2018 Jeep Wrangler Sahara

4×4 Systems

The Rubicon is the titan of off-road performance with its Rock-Trac 4×4 system. For more torque at the wheels, the Rubicon’s Rock-Trac 4×4 system allows you to slowly crawl over rocks with a 4:1 low gear ratio. Drivers will also be impressed with the Rubicon’s Dana 44 Heavy-Duty axle. The axle not only reduces the joint angles of the driveshaft for better ride quality but also increases ground clearance.

Alternately, Jeep has equipped the Wrangler Sahara with the Command-Trac 4×4 System. With an NV241 GII transfer case, you can shift on the fly. It has a 2.72:1 low range that’s ideal for off-road crawling over gravel and rocks. The Sahara is also equipped with the Next Generation Dana 30 solid front axle and the Next Generation Dana 44 heavy-duty rear axle.

Off-road Performance

The Rubicon comes standard with Tru-Lok front/rear locking differentials. The Tru-Lok electronic remote locking differentials increase traction for slippery conditions. Additionally, the Rubicon provides a sway bar disconnect system that drops the front wheels, giving drivers more control of the vehicle when off-roading. Drivers are able to automatically disengage the front sway bar as long as they’re driving in 4LO mode under 18 mph. The Rubicon has a 73.1:1 crawl ratio for better rock crawling and off-road performance.

For the 2018 Sahara, conventional differential rear and front axles are included. These are great for the everyday driver and a little off-roading on the side, as they’re less heavy-duty than those on the Rubicon. And drivers can rest assured that their Sahara won’t start rolling backward when starting the engine on an incline, thanks to the standard Hill Start Assist feature. Hill Start Assist works by keeping your brakes active while you move your foot from the brake to the accelerator.

Suspension

Each of these Jeep models is off-road ready with suspensions that come standard. Jeep has outfitted the Rubicon to tackle almost anything given its performance suspension system. And the Sahara comes standard with Jeep’s heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks. Each of the model’s suspension systems aligns with the vehicle’s other specifications for optimum off-road performance.
