Performance
Both the Sport and Laramie come with powerful standard engines. On the Sport, it’s the 5.7-liter HEMI V8, which produces 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. And on the Laramie, it’s the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, which produces 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. Although the Laramie has the less powerful of the two aforementioned engines, you have the choice of going with the HEMI V8 instead of the V6. Plus, with the Laramie, there’s the availability of a third engine: the turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel, which produces the RAM 1500 best fuel economy numbers, at 21/29 mpg. That engine option is unavailable on the Sport. Regardless of engine choice, each trim comes with an electronically-controlled 8-speed automatic transmission, and you can choose between a rear-wheel and four-wheel drivetrain. Plus, if you are particular about towing capability, which can be up to 10,480 lbs, it’s best to go with the EcoDiesel V6 or the HEMI V8.
Appearance
With the Sport or Laramie, you have a healthy number of body style configurations to choose from. There’s the four-door Quad Cab or Crew Cab, with either a 5’7” or 6’4” bed. And if you go with the Sport, you can pick the two-door Regular Cab with a 6’4” bed. Don’t be fooled by the RAM 1500’s bulk; built into its impressively huge profile is highly-evolved technology. It sports Active Air grille shutters that automatically close to reduce drag and improve efficiency. And if you choose to, you can add tubular wheel-to-wheel side steps for easier access to the truck bed and a tonneau bed cover for further reducing aerodynamic drag.
Safety
Already strong and sturdy, the 2016 RAM 1500 is equipped with airbags that ensure that you stay safe in an auto collision. On the Regular Cab, front impact airbags face both driver and passenger, side-impact airbags are mounted on the seats, and side curtain airbags are mounted on the roof for head protection. The Quad Cab and Crew Cab body styles have additional side curtain airbags for the rear seat row. Also on the 2016 RAM 1500 are electronic stability for restoring control over the truck when driving on slippery surfaces, a rearview camera for backup monitoring, and a security system as a theft-deterrent. If you go with the Laramie version, an alarm is added to the security system as an extra protective layer, and you can add a remote start to accompany the already standard remote keyless entry system.
