History of Dodge

The Dodge brand's roots go back a century to 1900 and the foundation of the Dodge Brothers Company by Horace Elgin and John Francis Dodge. Based in Detroit, the company's focus was the production of engine and chassis components for the other automakers in the city, primarily Olds and Ford.

Wanting to strike out on their own, Dodge produced its first car-the Dodge Model 30-in 1914. The Model 30 is considered by many to be superior to the Model T, thanks to features such as an all-steel body, a 12-volt electrical system, sliding-gear transmission, and a whopping 35 horsepower.

Before long, the Dodge Brothers were the no. 2 automaker in the United States, and Henry Ford had no choice but to buy out his former suppliers for roughly $25 million.

When the brothers passed away mere months apart in 1920, their wives inherited and then sold the company. Purchased by Dillon, Read, & Co. in 1925 and then sold to Walter P. Chrysler in 1928.

Dodge underwent a number of changes through the Great Depression-including an eight-cylinder engine, a number of stylistic adjustments, and the addition of numerous safety features-before World War II halted passenger vehicle sales in 1942.

When Dodge re-launched passenger car sales in 1945, it led to popular models such as the Dart, Coronet, and Lancer. It wasn't until the launch of the Charger, Super Bee, and Challenger in the late 60s/early 70s that Dodge hit its stride.

In the decades since, the bullseye band has become synonymous with muscular, American-made cars that are track tested and street savvy.

Dodge's legacy of vehicles that are practical, powerful, and proficient continues into today. 100 years on and still going strong, come find out for yourself why the Dodge brand continues to thrive as one of America's favorite brands at Gwinnett Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram!
